Samaritans offer confidential emotional support to people going through a crisis or in

distress, including people at risk of suicide, by being there to listen. We aim to help people

find ways of coping with their distress, however acute, through answering telephone calls,

emails, texts and face to face contact. We also have an outreach programme which

includes running and supporting the listening service at both local prisons and providing

talks about emotional health and our services at local schools and within organisations.

Our callers – of all ages – contact us to talk about problems covering all aspects of

life. These include alcoholism, self-harming, financial worries, mental health problems,

bereavement, loneliness, relationships, divorce, physical disability, sexual

problems, examination pressure, homelessness, unemployment, step-children issues, drug

problems, health worries, emotional, physical, mental abuse, including problems at work

such as workplace stress, difficult people, redundancy, relocation and career issues.

During 2013, the NW Surrey Samaritans branch handled 35,981 contacts with callers,

whether they were by phone, text, email or in person. There are 107 active volunteers in

our branch aged from 18 to over 80. We run the branch without any salaried staff and

receive no government funding so rely on donations or our own fundraising to remain

open. It costs £25,000 per annum to maintain and run the branch in Addlestone,

Surrey. We are a registered charity – number 238325 – and operate as an independent

branch within the network of 201 branches of Samaritans nationwide.

The NW Surrey Samaritans branch has its 50th birthday in 2014 and we are organising

some anniversary events for corporate sponsorship, the local community and our

volunteers. There will be publicity opportunities at these events.
